Daisy I. Cruz Christian

If ever there was a test of a person’s ability to make life-saving decisions under pressure with precision, compassion and empathy, Hurricane Maria was that test. And it was during the hurricane’s aftermath that then-Vice Mayor Daisy Cruz passed the ultimate test.

Tasked by the island’s mayor to lead the island’s recovery effort, Daisy took charge by coordinating and supporting the various municipal and federal agencies and local nonprofit groups working to recover from the catastrophe that wrecked her lifelong home.

Daisy Cruz Christian was born in 1972 to a working-class family on the island of Vieques. After graduating from Escuela Germán Rieckehoff High School, Daisy went on to earn a degree in Communications from Sacred Heart University (Santurce, Puerto Rico) in 1994.

While raising her family in Vieques, Daisy went to work on behalf of the Municipality, serving as the island’s Director of Human Resources (2001-2009), Director of Citizen Services (2013), and then as an Executive Assistant (2013-2017). In January 2017, Daisy Cruz, a member of the Popular Democratic Party (PPD), was appointed Vice Mayor of Vieques

Today Daisy serves as an Administrator at Healthpromed, a Community Health Center.

At every level, Daisy Cruz has demonstrated her critical-thinking and decision-making skills, her ability to communicate and creatively resolve conflicts, and most importantly, her empathy for working-class Viequenses.
